Who owns Antarctica?
The UK was the first country to sign the Antarctic Treaty Then Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South
Africa, USA and the former Soviet Union. The Antarctic Treaty came into action on 23 June 1961. The Treaty says that there can be no nuclear tests or dumping of radioactive waste in Antarctica. The Treaty also states that Antarctica is reserved (in a way) for scientists to do research. There is no real owner of Antarctica because lots of countries own different parts of it.
