How is Antarctica under threat from mining, Tourism and climate change?
Antarctica is under threat from climate change (quote from section "What is the climate like") Unfortunately global warming is melting Antarctica. If it did melt then the sea levels would rise by 61 metres or 200 feet. That's huge! But this shouldn't happen in any of our life times.
There are quite a few, known deposits of coal and oil in Antarctica. In the past 50 years of research no large deposits of coal or iron have been discovered. In Antarctica mining can be very dangerous and difficult. Also expensive. The ice is very thick so mining is difficult.
Tourism is effecting Antarctica because when people drop rubbish the animals can get stuck in it. This could cause harm or even death. Also tourism causes pollution which will cause Antarctica to melt. This is not good! We are stopping dumping and reducing tourism. If this happens then we can stop anything happening to Antarctica. To stop Antarctica from melting we are limiting tourism and trying to reduce global warming as much as possible. This will make sure Antarctica never melts therefore the sea wont rise by 61 metres ever!
